More than just a tip
Many slantermen long to master, that one legendary enormous look for that constantly resist capture. At the culmination of Elizabeth Bishops The Fish, the speaker unit makes a decision to release such a catch. Bishop never states the speakers intentions or attitude toward the slant and at first it may seem as if the speaker releases the slant on a sudden impulse. However, on close care to Bishops langu jump on, it can be inferred that a gradual swap in the speakers attitude toward the fish and the tie with the fish is what ultimately motivates her to release it. The narrator of this poem goes finished a series of stages in which she is at first complimentary from the fish, then intrigued by him, and then finally sympathetic towards him.
As the poem opens, the speaker catches a tremendous fish (Line 1). The fish is large enough that as she holds him out beside the boat he is only halfway out of the water. At first, the size of the fish is all that preoccupies the speakers mind. The fish hangs a grunting saddle (7) and the speaker views his physical appearance ignoring the deeper qualities. She begins to examine his exterior, but there is no real connection yet.

The fish is homely and knock about these words emphasize the fishs physical age without any particular sentiment attached to it. Through this phraseology Bishop portrays an attitude of distaste and it is not until the speaker notices a simile between the fish and wallpaper that the attitude changes.
First, the speaker describes how ugly the fish is by mentioning his skin hanging in strips similar ancient wallpaper (11).
