Dubbed our nations guardian of liberty, the ACLU is the nations largest public interest law firm sacred to exhorting for the protection of Americans innate rights and freedoms. The roots of the ACLU trace back up to the years surrounding the Communist Revolution. In fear that the cause would spread to the United States, Attorney General Mitchell Palmer began rounding up and deporting radicals. In what became known as the 1919 and 1920 Palmer Raids, thousands of people were arrested without warrants and without regard for their constitutional freedoms. It was then that Roger Baldwin and a small assort of other sassy Yorkers formed the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). With more than 500,000 members belong to 53 regional chapters, about 200 staff attorneys, thousands of put up attorneys and offices nationwide, the ACLU has well surpassed being just a small group of crusaders into the nations leading advocates for the protection of civil liberties.

In retaliation, the ACLU enlisted high school teacher John T Scopes to test system and violate state law by teaching Charles Darwins theory of evolution. Scopes was eventually prosecuted and the ACLU with attorney Clarence Darrow, forbidden together to defend him. The state of Tennessee, however, found Scopes guilty plainly the verdict was later overturned. The guilty verdict did little at the moment to change the Tennessee law, but it did demonstrate the importance of schoolman freedom in America.
