Black Psychology

The concerns of Black psychology revolve around the development of a discipline which
not only studies the behavior of Black persons, merely seeks to transform them into self- informed
agents of their own mental and political liberation. This is achieved through: 1 ) a severe critique
and rejection of white psychology, in terms of its methodology, conclusions and the ideological
premise on which it rests; 2) provision of Afrocentric models of study and therapy; and 3)
self-conscious intervention in the social struggle for a more Black and military personnel environment.
The history of the Association of Black Psychologists reflects the consolidation and
development of clear-cut but overlapping schools of Black psychology.

These are the traditional, reformist and thoroughgoing schools.

The traditional school is defined by: 1) its defensive and/or reactive posture; 2) its lack of
concern for the development of a Black psychology and its continued support of the Eurocentric
model with nipper changes; 3) its concern with changing white attitudes, and 4) its being
essentially critical without crack substantive correctives

The reformist represents a period of historical development as well as a current posture.



It
maintains few of the concern for white attitudes and behavior, but focuses more on change
in public policy than on simply attitudinal change. Furthermore, this school begins to advocate
an Afrocentric psychology but still combines it with traditional focus on invoke for change that
would ostensibly benefit Blacks and whites and thus U.S. society .

The rotatory school makes no appeal to whites and directs their attention instead to Black
passel in terms of analysis, treatment and transformation. Moreover, they insist on and are
growth a psychology that has its roots in the African worldview which is enemy of and
opposed to the European worldview .
